Building a rain garden to help the environment

Rain gardens and swales aren’t just beautiful landscape features. They also help recharge groundwater, reduce pollution in waterways, provide habitat for butterflies, birds and other pollinators, and build soil health.

Daily Acts of Petaluma is hosting a free online presentation Oct. 15 on how to design and install your own rain garden and swales.

The program will cover the benefits of slowing, spreading and sinking storm water runoff and show how retaining storm water in our landscapes can help reduce the impact of climate change. The webinar is 5:30 to 7 p.m.

For more information and to sign up for a link to the webinar or visit dailyacts.org. Those who sign up but can’t attend live will receive a recording afterward along with addition resources.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about attending the library talk. 10:30 a.m. to noon. 9291 Old Redwood Highway, Building 100.

Turn your garden into a dreamscape of food, habit and water

Learn the fundamentals of Permaculture, an eco-friendly gardening practice that serves human and wild life, during a free class Oct. 19.

The Petaluma-based nonprofit Daily Acts, which teaches sustainable living practices, is partnering with the Permaculture Design Program Team at the Occidental Arts & Ecology, to talk about permaculture design and how to apply and cultivate it in a home garden.

Permaculture is a design method that promotes landscapes that are regenerative, water-wise, provide habitat for birds, insects and other wildlife and that work in collaboration with the natural world. The class will talk about conservation hydrology, building soil health and selecting plants for food and habitat.

Light refreshments will be offered to attendees. The workshop is from 1-5 p.m. at a rural location in Petaluma that will be disclosed with registration. For information and to register visit https://dailyacts.org/events-cal/dreamscaping-for-food-habitat-and-water-resilience.
