Sonoma Mission Gardens offering free sunflower kits

Sonoma Mission Gardens is offering free packets of sunflower seeds to customers in a show of support for Ukraine, where the sunflower is a national symbol.

“Our hope is to blanket our town with these beautiful flowers as a reminder to keep our thoughts and hearts in the forefront for the people of Ukraine,” the Sonoma nursery announced in its online newsletter.

The packets contain fertilizer and Sunspot dwarf sunflower seeds, which grow to 2 to 3 feet.

Plant sunflowers at a depth of 1 to 2 inches after April 1 in the sunniest spot in your garden. Water them daily.

Pressed flowers workshop slated

Learn to make pretty cards with pressed flowers from the garden during a workshop April 4 hosted by The Santa Rosa Garden Club.

Supplies will be provided to create cards or bookmarks. The class is limited to 20. Cost is $20, which goes toward a scholarship program for students at Santa Rosa Junior College. Understanding packaged soil, composting and worm bins

Master Gardeners Kitty Ritz and Karen Felker will lead a free workshop March 29 on selecting soil, composting and setting up worm bins to enrich.

Raising worms is a good way to create sustainable, organic soil amendment for your garden. The session, geared to gardeners at all skill levels, will offer practical tips to improve soil health and support a thriving garden. There will time for questions and answers. Growing your own food is good in so many ways, including building community and resiliency. The Sonoma County Master Gardeners will hold a Neighborhood Food Gardening Fair March 22 that will help you get an early start on the growing season with friends and neighbors. Experts will have information and advice on seed starting and building food gardening networks. Combining efforts and resources builds even stronger resiliency.
