Planning a new remodel project for the new year? Here are 6 trends in flooring

There is one word to describe what to expect in 2025 design trends: warmth.

Designers are predicting a rise in warmer colors, feelings, and tones. You’ll see more deep earth shades like forest green, browns, and crimson reds, according to Studio McGee.

You’ll also see personality come out in fun geometric shapes. Rugs, textiles and wallpapers will all have variations of different shapes, reflecting a mix of both vintage and modern styles.

When it comes to what you’re walking on, trends have changed from the past few years. Here’s what you can expect in 2025.

Warmer wood tones

There will (finally) be a break from the greyish hues in flooring that cool off every room in the house. The light white oak flooring options are going to be far less prominent in 2025, designer Kerrie Kelly tells The Spruce.

Unlike the sterility of the grey-toned floors of the last seven years, warmer-toned woods like walnut and warm oak will add a feeling of comfort in the home.

These natural colors will play well with the deep earth colors, especially greens and reds.

Tile patterns

While the walls will have deep, saturated colors, the floors are a great place to have some fun. 2025 is the year you’ll see herringbone tiles, penny tiles, and any pattern in classic black and white.

Designer Skylar Barlett tells House Digest that creative tile patterns should be saved for rooms that don’t get a ton of traffic. High-traffic areas should have flooring that’s durable and water-resistant.

Wide-plank flooring

Whether it’s tile or vinyl flooring, big stones and planks will be a hot design trend in 2025. Marble and other natural stone tiles will dominate bathroom flooring designs in the next few years.

Architect and interior designer Andrew Pharis tells MarthaStewart.com that these large tiles will make bathroom remodels simple. Instead of different tiles for the shower and the areas outside of it, the large planks will cover the entire bathroom floor.

This style will also extend into kitchens. Natural stone tile or even a warm-tone vinyl wide plank can warm a kitchen and living area up without sacrificing durability.

Carpet is coming back

Millennials have been ditching carpet for more durable hard flooring, but that trend might be in the past. Decorilla predicts carpet will make a big comeback in 2025. If you’re looking for a chic way to add comfort underfoot, be sure to opt for jewel-toned carpets with a high-pile.

For even more fun, look for geometric designs to add a splash of personality to your aesthetic. Opt for carpet in areas where you want to add warmth and make a room even more comfortable.

Mixed material floors

For an elevated look, consider mixing your flooring materials. Interior designer Paula Dixon tells MarthaStewart.com, “Mixing materials on floors introduces a layer of depth and visual intrigue … integrating these diverse materials creates a refined design that reflects a more considered approach.”

If you’re trying to make a statement with mixed material floors, use patterns or designs to highlight certain areas of the home. If you want to elevate your entryway, for example, keep the mixed material designs contained to that area.

Alternatively, you can choose to have different flooring in different rooms. This works well if you like carpeted bedrooms but more durable materials such as tile or LVP in higher-traffic areas.
