For 51 years, Strand’s Carpeting and Paint has been a Marshalltown mainstay for professionals and do-it-yourselfers.

Residents will be pleased to know the businesses name, products and location — 11 E. Meadow Lane — will remain despite its sale to Painters Supply & Equipment (PS&E) of Taylor, Mich. in 2023 by former owner and president Carter S. Strand.

Strand — the third generation of the prominent family — has remained as a company sales representative, said store manager Sheila Finnell-Tomlinson of Bondurant.

Finnell-Tomlinson began her career with the business in 2012 in the paint department. She firmly reiterated that “nothing” will change at the store.

“We will continue to offer full-service flooring products, paint, tools and decorating services and supplies” she said. “We will also continue to sell quality paints and coverings to area manufacturers such as Emerson Process Management of Marshalltown and to customers throughout the United States. We will continue to sell and ship paint internationally and to 33 states and decorate homes and businesses throughout central Iowa.”

The Strand’s Flooring and Paint store sign graces the front entrance to the Marshalltown business.

One change staff are excited about is that PS&E employees are covered by health insurance and other benefits, said Finnell-Tomlinson.

Joining Finnell-Tomlinson on staff is James Boleman; interior designer Anna Galbraith; office manager Robyn Heiden’ purchasing coordinator Whitney Perkins-Willer; advertising and office Karin Podhajsky, McKaylee Roseland, Julie Swartz, Amanda Weeks; and flooring department manager Terry Whaley.

Strand’s history began in late December 1955, in Ames when The Paint Spot was purchased by Carter A. Strand, according to Strand’s website.

Steve Strand, the second generation, purchased the business in Marshalltown in 1973 from the Glidden company when Carter S. Strand was 3-years old. There were three employees initially and the store sold only paint and wallpaper. The business relocated from a storefront on West State Street to its larger location on Meadow Lane in 2001.
