The Home Edit Shares ‘Low Bar’ Porch Decor and the Easiest Way to Hand Out Candy on Halloween

Let’s face it, decorating doesn’t come easy to all of us, and many of us have a hard time getting our spaces to look as gorgeous as the decorators we watch on TV and follow on social media. Even when I try, my attempts never look half as good as theirs! Clea and Joanna, the founders of The Home Edit get it, and so they shared some “low bar” Halloween porch decor ideas at the beginning of October that just about anybody can replicate.

All it takes is some pumpkins of various sizes and colors and some battery-operated tealight candles or string lights. Pick up a few wicker-shaped pumpkins to put the small lights in and then line your porch steps or pathway with them. It looks absolutely gorgeous, it’s inexpensive to do, and takes just minutes!

The Home Edit’s “low bar” approach to decorating is my kind of decorating! It’s simple and no fuss, and really kind of hard to mess up. I love all of the different pumpkins! My kids are old enough to trick-or-treat on their own now, but I remember when they were small, and we weren’t home to hand out candy. I love this simple idea of having a skeleton hand it out for you – it’s a little spooky but not scary enough to turn kids away because the porch is so well lit.

Inexpensive Fall Porch Decorating Ideas

You don’t have to break the bank to have a gorgeous fall porch to welcome your guests. My porch is small; it includes a few narrow steps up to a cramped landing. I don’t have a whole lot of space to work with, but it still looks festive after adding just a few touches that can work on any porch…including Home Edit’s pumpkin idea with smaller pumpkins instead of the large ones.

Since your front door is the focal point, simply adding a wreath can give it a welcoming feel. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for wreaths, so I start the fall season with a fall themed wreath, change it out for Halloween, and then choose another for Thanksgiving. Yes, wreaths can be pricey, so I wait until the end of each holiday or season and pick them up at Home Goods or Hobby Lobby when they’re on clearance where you can pick up expensive wreaths for next to nothing!

I don’t have room for a chair on my porch, but for fall I add a couple of hay bales that I can set things on. Instead of a skeleton like Home Edit used, I picked up a Halloween themed cat with tinsel fur to put next to a plastic cauldron I found at the grocery store of all places. If you have a stair railing, you can wrap it in fall foliage or leaves, or even in lights. And don’t write off the Dollar Tree – I always find a ton of holiday themed decor there and throw it away at the end of the season instead of having to store it.

Fall flowers and foliage in decorative pots are another cost-effective way to brighten up your outdoor space. If you’re buying mums, don’t purchase ones that are already fully blooming and instead opt for ones that haven’t bloomed yet. Mums that are already fully bloomed will last a few weeks if you’re lucky. But if you purchase ones that are getting ready to bloom, they could show off for four to eight weeks, or even longer than that depending on the weather!
