How the architect and design industries can be more sustainable with their flooring choices will be the focus of the Flooring Sustainability Summit next month in Washington, D.C. Executives from such organizations as the U.S. Green Building Council, the American Society of Interior Designers, HOK, Gensler and Perkins&Will are among those expected to speak at the event at the Mayflower Hotel, July 16-17.

The second-annual summit will include discussions and workshops on the evolving sustainability landscape, flooring circularity and supply chain collaboration, as well as a Sustainability 101 workshop, a primer for attendees who want to prepare for the event’s in-depth discussions.

Keynote speakers for the event include:

–Corey Clayborne, senior vice president of Knowledge and Practice

–Eric Corey Freed, principal and director of sustainability, Cannon Design

–Elizabeth Von Lehe, chair-elect, ASID

–Peter Templeton, president and CEO, U.S. Green Building Council

Panel presentations include the Architectural Panel, which will discuss the evolving role of architects and designers in driving sustainability through material choices, balancing performance, cost and environmental impact amid shifting regulations and market demands. Another, called The Sustainability Landscape 2025 and Beyond, will examine the key policy drivers and market forces shaping the future of sustainability and will dive into the latest green and healthy building standards, rating systems, codes and procurement strategies.

The Flooring Circularity panel will explore how circularity is reshaping sustainability efforts in the flooring industry, with a focus on embodied carbon, durability, recyclability and reuse within existing frameworks.

And the Supply Chain Collaboration—Sustainability Education and Awareness Across the Flooring Value Chain panel will explore how manufacturers’ sustainability efforts — driven by shifting policies, standards, and emerging health and environmental initiatives — are translated throughout the supply chain, from production through procurement to end-use.

The Flooring Sustainability Summit’s co-hosts are the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), Natural Stone Institute (NSI), North American Laminate Flooring Association (NALFA), Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) and Tile Council of North America (TCNA).

The event will also announce the winner of its Flooring Sustainability Summit Project Design Award.
