Woman’s Dad Offers To Help Paint House-Can’t Cope With His Behavior on Job

A woman’s father has become the unexpected star of a viral TikTok after offering to help paint her house—only to take a snack break 15 minutes in and fall asleep on the job.

Emily Huynh, 29, shared the hilarious video on TikTok, where viewers were left in stitches over her dad’s laid-back approach to home improvement. Since the video was posted, it has received over 98,000 likes at the time of writing. Huynh spoke to Newsweek about her dad’s endearing habits—and their relationship behind the video.

At first, Huynh said, her dad didn’t even want to help with the painting. But despite his initial reluctance, he did show up—and even took the lead at first.

“Contrary to the video, my dad truly was the painting [most valuable player] of the day,” Huynh said. “He showed us the ropes, as it was our first time ever painting a home. He’s just a hard worker who needs his snacks and naps. I think we can all relate.”

Indeed, it wasn’t long into the job before he gave in to the aroma of freshly unpacked Vietnamese baked goods.

“My mom was unpacking all of the Vietnamese baked goods that she brought as we started painting, and the aroma was just too much for my dad to resist. It was his immediate call to indulge, even if it was only 15 minutes into painting,” Huynh said. “I’m imagining the scene from Tom and Jerry where Jerry is swept off his feet simply from the smell of food.”

After snacking, Huynh’s dad took his break to the next level, napping for about an hour: “That man can pass out anywhere, anytime,” she added.

Despite his leisurely approach, the painting project was completed as planned.

‘My dad loves me’

It’s not the first time Huynh’s dad has been unapologetically, well, her dad.

Huynh recalled another moment that demonstrated her dad’s relaxed parenting style, from a trip to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA.

“My dad somehow lost us as we were about to ride the Loch Ness Monster rollercoaster,” she said. “I encouraged my sister to join me for her first ever ‘upside down’ rollercoaster, although she was adamant about having my dad ride with her. With him nowhere in sight, I was able to convince her to conquer her fears, and she has never looked back since. When we exited the ride, we were able to relocate my dad, only to find him on a bench asleep.”

For Huynh, moments like these are just part of who her dad is—laid-back, loving and present in his own way.

“He is a carefree, goofy and loving father who has taught me to work hard, but not to be too hard on myself,” she said.

For her, actions speak louder than words when it comes to familial love.

“As the first-born daughter of two first-generation Vietnamese-American immigrants, I think I can speak for many that Asian parents can be very far and few with their words,” she said. “With that being said though, the way that they’re able to demonstrate how much they care for us is how they show up for us…Not a single important milestone was missed, and I know that even if he doesn’t say it often, that my dad loves me.”
