As the garden goes to sleep, it’s time to replenish garden supplies, add a house plant or two, and plan for next year. What a great opportunity to peruse the local nurseries and immerse yourself in the holiday spirit.
Rick’s Garden Center offers tropical plants, a dedicated cactus room, along with plenty of Christmas trees and wreaths. Tools include space-optimizing kits for self-watering table gardens and balcony gardens, while the foldaway garden kneeler and seat provides gardening cushion and comfort. Prepare now for seed sowing with Rick’s large selection of heirloom seeds and check next spring for their enhanced tomato plant offering.
Phelan Gardens showcases a wide assortment of garden essentials, garden décor, easy-care air plants, and Colorado-made Fire Mountain edibles. The adjoining greenhouse is full of plants including cyclamen and colorful Christmas cacti.
Phelan’s centerpiece Christmas tree is a nice example of organic décor sporting seed pods, dried leaves and flowers, berries, and grasses. Take advantage of Phelan’s workshops for creating wreaths and Christmas centerpieces in November and December.
Harding Nursery is transformed for the Christmas season. Their perennial section is cleared into a lot for cut trees, their pathways are lined with festive live trees adorned with red bows, and their retail office is chock-a-block full of myriad decorations to adorn the tree.
Harding hosts an Open House Thanksgiving weekend. They invite you to meet the family’s farm animals, shop for trees, custom wreaths, garlands and ornaments, and to sample hot cider and other goodies.
Spencer’s Produce, Lawn, & Garden is equally decked out for the season with sparkling lights, charming Christmas décor, blown-glass mushrooms, gazing balls, concrete statuary, garden shoes and other supplies. Their large bulb supply is located next wooden clogs from Holland.
Spencer’s also offers produce six days a week, a dozen varieties of delicious fruit pie and a candy shop that includes unique, vintage and hard-to-find candies.
Summerland Gardens provides a richly decorated boutique environment full of gift ideas, ranging from unique hand-crafted garlands to handmade woolen gnomes from Denmark, to sauces, soaps, exotic plants and more.
Readers can find books on succulents, house plants, orchids and bonsai. The Birds in a Book hosts a variety of birds that pop up into a charming bird bouquet while the “gifts to go” section includes garden tools and gloves. Summerland hosts Santa Claus on Dec. 9.
These nurseries, each with their own flair, are replete with planters and pots, garden décor, statuary, birdbaths, fountains and trellises. Additionally, they tuck in specialty jams, sauces, syrups and honeys. Step out of the garden and into their shops. Browse among their treasures to find plentiful gifts for the gardener this season.
