(Serious voice) Let’s just get the awkwardness out of the way: Naked gardening is for real. And Florida apparently is good and bad at it.
Though Miami clinched the No. 1 spot from among 200 cities across the country, cities like Tallahassee (No. 99), Port St. Lucie (No. 102) and Cape Coral (No. 159) ranked low. The rankings were determined by a 2023 study from LawnStarter, a lawn-care service blogging about the top U.S. places to hike, bike and do naked gardening.
With temperatures in the 90s and that stifling heat that hits you every time you open a door to outside, perhaps now’s a good a time as any to work out in the garden in the buff.

In total, 13 Florida locales large and small (population size doesn’t matter) made the “best cities for naked gardening” list. Which cities are they, what qualifies a community for the rankings and, um, what are Florida’s public nudity laws? See below for the naked truth.
Is naked gardening for real?
Yes. There are many “naked” events celebrated worldwide to promote body positivity and, to a degree, celebrate your natural self.
For instance, there’s a #worldnakedbikeride hashtag on Instagram and TikTok. Don’t worry, most posts do not fall in the #NSFW category. Most #BikeToks on this subject aim to educate people about this mini “Tour de France without pants.” World Naked Bike Ride has events worldwide June through September — Florida’s hottest time of the year. The global movement, whose motto is “Bare as you dare,” began in 2003 to protest oil dependency and indecent exposure to cars, according to World Naked Bike Ride’s website. Today, the cause is “targeted toward promoting safer cycling infrastructure and body positivity.”
What is World Naked Gardening Day?
According to nationaldaycalendar.com, Mark Storey and Jacob Gabriel founded World Naked Gardening Day in 2005. Storey, a consulting editor for Nude & Natural magazine, and Gabriel, a permaculturist, established the day as a project of the Body Freedom Collaborative, the site states, with the first WNGD on Sept. 10, 2005. Two years later, the date was moved to the first Saturday in May.

Why was Miami, Florida, No. 1 for naked gardening?
According to Lawnstarter, in 2022, Miami ranked No. 2 behind Austin, Texas. The South Florida hotspot was No. 1 in 2021.
Most of the top cities in the 2023 ranking scored high in “nude gardener-friendliness” and “local interest” but show mixed results in “weather forecast” and “safety.”
At the rear end of this year’s ranking are mostly cold, northern cities such as Sioux Falls, South Dakota (No. 199), St. Paul, Minnesota (No. 197), and Anchorage, Alaska (No. 194). Most of these cities were the worst performers in “nude gardener-friendliness,” with some exceptions in other categories, including “local interest” and “safety,” the study states.
Other findings from the Lawnstarter study:
- “Florida’s biggest cities aren’t shy to reveal their most skintimate sides. Four of the five cities with the most nudists (when adjusted by total population) are in the Sunshine State, including Orlando at No. 1.”
- Miami is the best place for trimming your lawn and, ahem, woman- or manscaping. That’s personal grooming − aka hair removal − located in places where the sun don’t shine. Miami outranked the competition in gardening supplies (No. 1) and hair removal services per square mile (No. 2).
What are the best cities for naked gardening?
This is the third year LawnStarter has done this study. The lawn service company’s blog compared the 200 biggest U.S. cities based on these categories: nude gardener-friendliness, local interest, weather forecast and safety.

Public nudity in Florida?
Is public indecency a crime in Florida? According to Florida Statues Section 800.03,
(1) A person commits unlawful exposure of sexual organs by:(a) Exposing or exhibiting his or her sexual organs in public or on the private premises of another, or so near thereto as to be seen from such private premises, in a vulgar or indecent manner; or(b) Being naked in public in a vulgar or indecent manner.(2)(a) Except as provided in paragraph (b), a violation of this section is a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.(b) A second or subsequent violation of this section is a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.(3) The exposure of sexual organs by any of the following does not violate this section:(a) A mother breastfeeding her baby; or(b) An individual who is merely naked at any place provided or set apart for that purpose.
